  1. Avoid the initial destruction. Anyone who lives in major metropolitan areas is going to die right off the bat. Every movie we have ever seen involving the apocalypse involves the destruction of the massive population centers all over the world. Whether the apocalypse is brought on by machines, aliens or God the only way to survive the apocalypse is to avoid the initial destruction by not living in a city.
  2. Step 2
Develop your scrounging capabilities. Everyone should live like a homeless person for at least a year so that they are prepared to survive the apocalypse. After the apocalypse restaurants are going to be closed, money is going to have no value and all the food in your refrigerator is going to go bad. Homeless people are very good at finding the best shelter and locating food on a very limited budget.
  3. Step 3
Get in shape. In order to survive the apocalypse you are going to have to do a lot of running. We are not sure what you need to be running from, but you are going to have to run a lot and for long distances. Your body must be able to handle running at a high rate of speed for long distances without breathing heavily should you have to hide. Heavy breathers after running cannot survive the apocalypse.
  4. Step 4
Find a leader and follow them. Someone must survive the apocalypse that can organize the survivors and lead them in some kind of rebellion or resistance. It is crucial that you find this great leader and support him in every way possible.

How to Survive in the Mountains

  1. Expect the possibility that you can become stranded. Read about the potential hazards of the mountains you intend to visit on websites like MountainZone.com. If you go into the mountains expecting the worst, you may be better prepared to survive in the mountains should you end up stranded or lost.
  2. Step 2
Be ready for bad weather. Even in the summer, the mountains can experience sudden storms, including snow storms, that can materialize out of nowhere. Never go up to the mountains with only light clothing. Always bring warm clothes to put on should a storm create poor conditions.
  3. Step 3
Bring materials that you can use to start a fire. The biggest danger to being able to survive in the mountains is the cold. It is an absolute necessity to have a lighter or matches (kept in a baggie to remain dry) that you can use to start a fire. Also keep materials you can use for kindling to help the fire light and grow.
  4. Step 4
Stay in the right frame of mind. Do not act rashly through fear or despair. Keep your wits about you and make a plan. Consider where you are and where you need to go to find safety or be rescued. You greatly increase your chances of being able to survive in the mountains if you can remain calm and rational throughout your ordeal.
  5. Step 5
Keep a compass and map with you at all times. If you want to survive in the mountains, you have to get out of them at some point. A compass and map can help you find your way to either a highway or other populated location where you can find help.

How to Survive a Drought

  1. Plan for the drought. Develop a strategy to use when a drought occurs. Read an almanac that predicts future conditions based on tracking rainfall from past seasons. Measure the rainfall during the year to determine a course of action for the likelihood of drought conditions.
  2. Step 2
Make or purchase rain barrels and cisterns. Divert water to create an irrigation system. Use this system to collect and redirect water for people, plants and livestock. Dig a well or tap into ground water as a new source of water.
  3. Step 3
Consider the impact of a drought on livestock. Sell livestock to market when a drought happens to thin out the herd. Recover by adding stocker or breeders to a mix of animals to reproduce new livestock.
  4. Step 4
Recycle milk jugs or plastic bottles to create a watering system. Fill the containers with water and poke small holes into them with a pin or ice pick. Place the bottles in the ground within the circumference of the plant. Let the water saturate plant's root system.
  5. Step 5
Preserve water for plants, trees and shrubs. Bed down plants for the winter with organic mulch to preserve moisture. Leave grass clippings where they fall after mowing lawn. Water plants in the morning only.
  6. Step 6
Conserve water in your household by putting a 12 to 20 ounce plastic bottle in a toilet tank to displace water that fills for waster disposal. Buy bottled water and store it. Be sure to rotate the stored water so it does not go bad.
  7. Step 7
Prevent unnecessary waste of water during a drought by timing showers to 5 minutes. Don't take baths or do so sparingly. Don't leave the water running when rinsing dishes, shaving or brushing your teeth. Fill a cup with water for brushing teeth. Stop up the basin and fill with water for shaving.
  8. Step 8
Fill a basin and hand wash 1 or 2 items of clothing at a time. Only wash full loads of laundry in the washing machine.

How to Survive in the Desert

Follow these simple rules and you may get out alive.

  1. Keep a survival kit in your vehicle, and pack one whenever you hike. It should contain things like matches, a compass, mirror to use for signaling, a knife, lip balm, sunscreen and something that will hold water.
  2. Step 2
Drink a small amount of water every hour. If you find a mostly dry streambed with just a small patch of wet earth, dig underneath to find water. Another method of obtaining water is to seal a plastic bag over a green plant. As the plant transpires the water vapor will collect inside the bag.
  3. Step 3
Plan to travel at night and sleep during the day if you find you have to survive in the desert for a period of time to protect yourself from heat related illness. Seek the shelter of any shade you can find.
  4. Step 4
Wear clothing. It may seem like you'll be cooler if you shed your clothes, but clothing actually helps your body's cooling process by preventing sweat from evaporating too quickly. Clothing will also help protect you from sunburn.
  5. Step 5
Prepare to signal planes passing overhead. If you have flares available, shoot one off whenever you see a plane. During the day keep a smoky fire burning; at night, a bright, clean burning one. Spell out the word SOS on the ground as large as you can using whatever materials you can find.

How to Survive in a Forest

  1. Keep fear at bay. It is completely natural to be afraid when you are faced with a survival situation. However, if you are going to survive in the forest, you must keep your thoughts clear and make sure you are not held captive by fear. The more your fear overcomes you, the lower your chances are of survival as your mind is going to become clouded and panic may set in.

  2. Step 2
Stay warm. Obviously cold is one of the primary dangers you face when you must survive in the forest. It is crucial that you do all you can to stay dry and keep your body temperature up. Never stop to sleep or quit moving around unless you have appropriate shelter.

  3. Step 3
Know how to make a fire. You are surrounded by wood and kindling. The four parts of creating a fire are spark, tinder, fuel and oxygen. You are surrounded by the materials you need to start a fire. The most difficult part of starting a fire is the spark. Obviously, if you have a lighter or matches this is not a problem. But if not, you can attempt to use a dry narrow pointed stick and a dry flat piece of wood. Make as much friction as possible by rubbing the pointed stick along the flat piece with some kindling in the direct area of the friction. This requires a great deal of work, but if done correctly, a fire can be started. Keep working at it until you start a fire, because without a fire it is going to be very difficult to survive in the forest.

  4. Step 4
Find or make some shelter. Caves and overhangs make for good shelter, but most likely you must build your own shelter. The easiest way to provide protection from the elements is to find a fallen tree and cover it with other branches and brush so that you can stay in the natural pit underneath the tree trunk. Shelter is a very important aspect of being able to survive in the forest.

  5. Step 5
Stay put unless you know exactly where you are. If you can build a stable shelter and start a fire you can survive in the forest for several days. If you are lost, it is better to stay put and wait for rescue. If you know where you are travel as far as possible during the day while making sure you stop long enough before dark so that you can erect another shelter.
